NZ – to bike is to like

Don’t believe your travelguide. New Zealand isn’t about jumping from a bridge with a bungy (280 dollar – 6 sec) or from a plane with a dude that knows how to work a parachute (500 dollar – 3 min). It’s about biking (30 dollar – 5h) on absolutely spectacular and well maintained trails with a stunning, beautiful backdrop. At least that is how I will remember NZ. I can’t believe how good the mountainbiking is here. World class, hands down the best I’ve done so far.

And of course it’s also about bad-ass golfing.

Nieuw-Zeeland

Nieuw-Zeeland is zonder twijfel spek naar mijnen bek. Veel meer dan dat het hiken en biken hier fenomenaal is, kan ik eigenlijk nog niet vertellen. Hoogtepunten tot hiertoe waren de hike in Kaikoura en de Tongarira Crossing (hike van 20 km over en door een door mist, wind en regen geteisterde vulkaankrater) en het mountainbiken in Taupo en Rotorua. Op de gewone plek vind je meer prentjes.

Melbourne and a freaky national park

Van Bali naar Darwin in Australië gevlogen, waar de heer net de zondvloed op gang getrokken bleek te hebben. Helaas was er geen ark te bespeuren (noah zal de goddelijke memo niet gelezen hebben). Gelukkig bood Jetstar duivels goedkope vluchten aan. Niet veel later stond ik in het zonnetje in Melbourne. James en Amy, die ik nog van Laos ken, hebben me 4 dagen in huis genomen en op sleeptouw doorheen de stad. Blijkbaar heb ik niet te veel foto’s genomen enkel van een paar wedstrijden op de Australian open en van een speciaal nationaal park in Melbourne. “In Melbourne” betekent net buiten de suburbs of 2 uur rijden van het centrum. Ter hoogte van Amsterdam, als je van de kathedraal vertrekt dus. Speciaal is een eufemisme voor freaky. Een of andere kerel heeft een stuk woud volgezet met zelfgemaakte standbeelden van aboriginals, maar ook van zichzelf o.a. als afgebeeld als messias. “Interessant” is een omschrijving die hier wel op zijn plaats is.

12 januari 2011 getrouwd in Bali op Balangan Beach

YEAHHH, we got married on a beach in Bali!

It was an absolutely amazing day. I proposed to Hanne about a month ago via Skype. Thank god, she said ‘yes’. We found a Balinese wedding planner who arranged everything for us. The only criteria we gave her was that we wanted to have the ceremony on a beautiful and deserted beach. She brought along a Balinese photographer, awesome guy, who knew precisely how cheesy we wanted the pics. Click on the big one above to see them all.

The scenery was as romantic as it was stunning. Just the two of us on a beautiful beach with big waves crashing on to the shore was everything we hoped it would be.

Afterwards we went to another beach nearby where we had dinner 5 meters away from the ocean. Big tunafish were jumping high out of the water right in front of us. A local band came to our table to play our favorite Elvissong: Only you .

It was an absolutely perfect day and we are so happy.
